Pandit Ji, please tell me mythology story behind Mahakaleshwar

img

Son, in simple words, Mahakaleshwar is swayambhu jyotrlingam. Means he revealed himself. Now listen, according to "Shivpuran" page no. 486 and 487, published by "Geetapress, Gorakhpur", I will tell you the story of Lord Mahakal. A Brahmin Vedpriya lived in the city of Avantika with his four sons; Devpriya, Priyamedha, Sukrat and Suvrat. Avantika is a name of Ujjain. Brahmin is the exclusive devotee of Lord Shiva. At the same time, a demon Dushan blessed by Lord Brahma and he started the attacks on all the holy persons. He took support of troops and sent four other demons to four directions. They had started attacks on Brahmins also. But, those 4 sons of Vedpriya didn't afraid from demons. When all the Brahmins were afraid, Vedpriya's sons told them "You all should trust on Lord Shiva" and they started worship of Lord Shiva.

img

So Dushan with his troop saw them and ordered "kill them, tie them". Those Brahmin sons ignored and continue their worship. When demon tried to kill those Brahmin sons, suddenly a large crater menifested with coarse at the place of worshiped shivlinga. Lord Shiva appeared immediately from that crater and became known as Lord Mahakaleshwar. Lord Shiva warn to demon, "oh Vile! I appeared for demons like you. You get away from these Brahmins." After saying this, Lord Shiva smashed that demon with his troop by shouting. All gods played their drums and flower shower has started from sky. Lord Shiva told to Brahmin sons "You ask for blessings".

img

Brahmins prayed Lord Shiva with folded hands; Mahakal! Mahadev! Grant us salvation from this world. You are here always to protect public. Give blessings to the people, who will sight you.

Pandit Ji, what is the significance of Mahakaleshwar temple?

img

Son, Mahakaleshwar comes in 12 Jyotirlings. This is the only "Dakshinmurti jyotirlingam", which have south facing. The Mahakaleshwar temple is sculptured in three stories. The idol of Omkareshwar Mahadev is in the sanctum above the Mahakal shrine and the idol of Nagchandreshwar on the third storey. Devotees get blessings of Nagchandreshwar only on the day of Nag Panchmi.

Son, Lord Mahakaleshwar's day starts with bhasm aarti. Bhasm aarti only performed in Mahakal temple. In temple, there is a kund established by Lord Hanuman, known as "Koti Tirth".
