The most mythological story behind kumbh mela is "churning of sea".
According to primeval narration or say fiction, while churning of the sea was completed with the collabration of Lords and Devils, a pot full of nectar was also revealed. The lords were not ready to give the nectar to the devils. So Jayant, son of Indra, ran away with the por and was followed by the devils. The lords and devils were struggling for the pot of nectar, it felt in the "Ganga", "Yamuna", "Godavari" and the "Kshipra" in the form of drops and these rivers became holy and the four places "Haridwar", "Prayag (Allahabad)", "Ujjain" and "Nasik" become sanctum.
The celebration of Kumbh Mela depends on the position of Jupiter (Brhaspati) and the sun. When the Sun is in Aries (Mesh Rashi) and Jupiter in Aquarius, it is celebrated in Haridwar. When Jupiter is in Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi) and the Sun is in Capricorn (Makar Rashi), then kumbh is celebrated at Prayag. It is said that when the Jupiter and the sun falls on the zodiac sign, Leo; then Kumbh Mela is celebrated at Trimbakeshwar in Nasik.
